How to Pass an Interview with an AI Assistant: Step by Step
In short: to pass an interview with an AI assistant, set up the audio source, load your résumé into the knowledge base and run a test question 10 minutes before the interview. During the interview you read the hints and answer in your own words, making sure the window never gets into screen sharing.
Step 1. Check the interview format
Find out in advance: is it a Zoom/Meet/Teams call, a recording, or proctoring? This determines whether an assistant is appropriate. If the rules ban third-party tools — use it only as a trainer before the interview.
Step 2. Configure the audio source
In the assistant, choose where to take questions from: system audio (the interviewer's voice from the call) or the microphone. Check the signal level: the indicator should react to speech. How to do this — in the “Operating modes” section.
Step 3. Load your résumé into the knowledge base
The PDF résumé becomes the context the model relies on. The more specific the résumé (technologies, projects, numbers), the more precise the answers. The file is processed locally. Details — “Knowledge base”.
Step 4. Run a test pass
Say 2–3 typical questions out loud and check that the draft is recognized correctly and the answer arrives within the expected time (2–5 s on GPU). Make sure Invisible Mode is on and the window is not visible when sharing.
Step 5. During the interview
- Keep the assistant window on a second monitor or behind the call window.
- Don't read from the screen verbatim — retell in your own words.
- If there's no answer, start with a definition and ask for clarification.
- Watch the latency: if it grows, reduce the model size.
What not to do
- Don't use the assistant if the rules explicitly forbid it.
- Don't answer mechanically — it's instantly noticeable and hurts you.
- Don't leave the assistant on during screen sharing without Invisible Mode.
FAQ
How much time does assistant setup take?
About 10 minutes: configure the audio source, load the résumé and run a test question.
What if the assistant can't keep up with the interview pace?
Reduce the STT model size so recognition runs faster, or use smaller models. See “Choosing an STT model”.
Can I use the assistant in a technical interview with coding?
Yes, it helps with theory and explanations while you write the code yourself. In live coding show your thinking instead of copying a solution.
Mockingbird — an offline interview assistant: local speech recognition, a knowledge base built from your résumé, answers in 2–5 seconds. Installation takes minutes.
